How it works
  • Class Schedule

  • Do I need to have had a heart attack to join?

No. Many participants have cardiac histories, but the service can also be appropriate for people with other stable long-term conditions or those who need structured, clinically informed exercise support.

Is this the same as NHS cardiac rehabilitation?

No. My Movement Medicine C.I.C. is a community exercise service. It is designed to complement formal rehabilitation and provide ongoing Phase 4-style support rather than replace NHS assessment or treatment.

Will everyone exercise at the same heart rate?

No. Heart-rate response is individual and can be strongly affected by medication, rhythm, device settings and fitness. Personal targets, RPE, symptoms and the talk test are all considered.

Do I have to wear a heart-rate monitor?

No, heart-rate monitoring is a valuable part of the face-to-face service, but the number is not the only way exercise intensity is judged. Borg RPE, symptoms, the talk test and movement quality also matter.

    Can I join if I take a beta-blocker?

Potentially, yes. Beta-blockers reduce heart-rate response, which is one reason RPE, symptoms and individual exercise guidance are important. Your target heart rate may need to be interpreted differently.

Can I join with a pacemaker or ICD?

Potentially, if you are medically stable and have appropriate exercise guidance. Device type, indication, rate settings, recent implantation and any restrictions may affect exercise prescription, so relevant information should be included in your health screening.

    Can complete beginners join?

Yes, when medically stable and appropriate for group exercise. Every station can be adapted and the emphasis is on building gradually.

What if I have several health conditions?

That is common. The health questionnaire should include all relevant diagnoses, symptoms and medication so the session can be adapted appropriately.

Can I try a session before committing?

Yes. The service offers a trial route for new participants so you can experience the session structure and establish an appropriate starting level before choosing how you would like to continue.

Can I attend more than once per week?

Yes. From October there are five weekly face-to-face sessions, and monthly subscription options are available for one, two or three sessions per week.

My Movement Medicine

I have been going to Jamie's classes for 3 years. It is a unique combination of all body cardio and active recovery. Jamie is professionally qualified to guide through classes and always on hand to help. I have had significant improvement. It is more than a class, it is an excellent social gathering with a great group. I would highly recommend.

Cardiac Rehab follow-on classes at the Armoury

"I joined this class at the beginning of February without even knowing it existed, and it has been incredibly beneficial for both my physical wellbeing and my mental health. The group is very welcoming and supportive, and I’ve formed some great friendships since joining.

As for our instructor, Jamie, the class is very well organised and creates a real sense of safety and security. We all wear watches that record our heart rate, which we can monitor on the iPad.

Jamie is kind, caring, and always looking out for us—making sure we’re okay and carefully monitoring our heart rates, not just on the iPad but also with oximetry. I truly believe these classes are invaluable for people living with heart disease."

What our members say:

Aortic Valve Replacement

I had intermittent shortness of breath in 2025 which was ultimately diagnosed as aortic valve stenosis. I opted for a mechanical valve replacement as I’m 62 and cardio surgeon recommended this as a cow or pig valve may well need replacing before I was 80 and open heart surgery would be more risky at that age. I was knocked side ways for a few months after the surgery but slowly slowly with lots of help, especially attending Jamie’s classes, after about 8 months I reckon I felt better and was a lot fitter than before my operation. Jamie’s classes are an excellent work out. They are open to all and are not intimidating and work really well.

My Movement Medicine C.I.C.

Having done no exercise all my life, I started at the inception of Jamie's my movement medicine classes 3 years ago. I haven't looked back. It would be wrong to actually say I enjoy exercise but I feel so much better after a Jamie class and I really enjoy the social aspect. I feel fitter and do look forward to my Monday and Wednesday sessions. Thank you Jamie!

My Movement Medicine C.I.C. Rehab Sessions

I have been going to Jamie Pickett's twice weekly cardiac rehab group sessions for over 3 years and find them really excellent. He is incredibly caring and helpful. I have found the sessions very beneficial for my recovery from a quadruple heart by-pass. In fact I feel bad if I miss a session! I would highly recommend Jamie's sessions !

What our members say:

Unbelievably Lucky

After my open heart surgery I was very. anxious when I had fished my six free cardiac exercise sessions. I then came to know about Jamie's classes to help patients further improve on their physical capabilities and have a stronger heart to make us healthy and strong.
His class had regulars who welcome me and made me feel so comfortable and happy that I now miss it if I don't go to the classes each time. I feel so much stronger and always look forward to each class. By the way I also am diabetic. It helps me to be disciplined in every way and keeps me on the right path.
Thank you Jamie. You are Ace.

My Movement Medicine C.I.C.

I first met Jamie after my heart attack in 2023 when the hospital provided free six weeks of cardiovascular classes. I was impressed with his care and understanding and excellent music and the classes were fun!
I was delighted when Jamie said he was going to offer weekly private classes across the road from the hospital.
Following my move out of London Jamie began offering hybrid classes which meant I could join on Zoom, and which was such a relief as I had not managed to find any suitable classes locally.
I attend classes online twice a week and they provide an important anchor for me. Jamie is such an excellent teacher. I always feel safe and know that if I have any problems with an exercise, he will find a great alternative for me.
I am not a huge lover of exercise and yet I look forward to Jamie’s classes every time.
